Dr. Johann Slazus
MBChB, MMed(Ophth) Stell, FCS(SA) FCOphth(UK)

Born and educated in South Africa, Dr Johann Slazus began his career in medicine at the Medical School of Stellenbosch, graduating M.B.Ch.B (Stell) in 1975. In 1979, he started his post-graduate training as a full-time resident in the Department of Ophthalmology at Tygerberg Hospital, qualifying MMed (Ophth) and FCS (SA) in 1983. He then joined the hospital as a part-time Consultant, a position he held until 1990.

In 1983 he went into private practice and currently works at clinics in Cape Town, Stellenbosch and London as a consultant to Optimax. Having qualified as a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) in 1991, Dr Slazus has since held numerous positions, including member of the Organising Committee of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa Congresses, the Southern African and Refractive Society Congress and Past-Chairman of the Western Cape Province Branch of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (1993-1995). Dr Slazus also has certification in Laser Refractive Surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

In addition to being a member of the Board of Trustees of the Cape Eye Hospital, Dr Slazus is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa and a past-president of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa.

As well as having a special interest in refractive surgery and performing cataract and glaucoma surgery on a regular basis, Dr Slazus has presented scientific papers to the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa, the South African Cataract and Refractive Society congresses and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery on subjects including central islands in excimer photorefractive keratectomy, irregular astigmatism and excimer laser surgery, and LASIK Five-Year Follow-Up Study.

Dr Slazus holds membership with the following professional organisations: the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA); Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth); Fellow of the College of Surgeons with Ophthalmology (South Africa); member of the American Cataract and Refractive Society; member of the South African Cataract and Refractive Society and member of the International Refractive Surgery Club.
